Faroese products will gain easier access to the Icelandic market, including goods from the Mjólkavirki Búnaðarmanna dairy cooperative, Faroese Foreign Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen said.

Nielsen discussed the issue in a phone call with Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir on Tuesday, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The Faroese minister said many Faroese are dissatisfied with the 20-year-old Hoyvík Agreement, arguing it gives Icelandic products easy access to the Faroese market while Faroese goods face significant barriers in Iceland.

A few years ago, the Faroe Islands threatened to cancel the agreement to push for concessions, but that did not yield significant results, Nielsen said. He noted that the current initiative is not the first attempt to address the imbalance.
