Philip Westh, who was convicted of murdering 17-year-old Emilie Meng in 2016, has now admitted that he was the one who killed her, DR reports. His defence lawyer, Karina Skou, confirmed the confession to the broadcaster.

“It has been a wish to take responsibility, which is why he has also confessed,” Skou said.

According to the Danish newspaper Berlingske, Westh was recently questioned in connection with the case and has also provided what the paper describes as “supplementary information” about the kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl from Kirkerup.

DR’s legal analyst Louise Dalsgaard said the confession does not change anything for the police or the prosecution. “The case was considered solved when Westh was charged, prosecuted, and later convicted of the murder,” she said.

“I also do not think that Meng’s family had any doubt that he was the perpetrator, even though he did not confess during the trial, but this now of course gives them 100 percent certainty,” Dalsgaard added.

Emilie Meng disappeared in the Danish town of Korsør in July 2016. Westh, now 35, was convicted of her murder.
