NATO foreign ministers to meet in secure Skåne-themed rooms in Helsingborg
NATO foreign ministers will gather this week in Helsingborg, Sweden, for the alliance’s first ministerial meeting on Swedish soil, with secure conference rooms designed to reflect the local Skåne region, reports SVT Nyheter.
Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (Moderate Party) showed the venue to SVT, where a “room within a room” is being constructed to prevent eavesdropping. “It will be very nice and very Skåne-inspired,” she said, adding that the decor and menus would carry a regional touch, possibly featuring the signature Skåne yellow of rapeseed fields.
The two-day meeting, held at a hotel and conference centre in Helsingborg’s harbour, will prepare for July’s NATO summit in Ankara. Security measures include press centres and restricted zones around the site.
Malmer Stenergard expressed hope the gathering would ease tensions after recent friction between the US and allied nations. “There has been some harmful rhetoric lately. I hope we can move past that, and I believe this meeting can contribute to that,” she said.
The event marks Sweden’s first time hosting a NATO ministerial meeting since joining the alliance.
