Sweden will host its first NATO foreign ministers’ meeting on May 21–22 in Helsingborg, marking a significant step in the country’s role within the alliance, reports SVT Nyheter. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard held a press briefing ahead of the event, which serves as a key preparatory gathering before the NATO summit in Ankara in July.

Malmer Stenergard described the meeting as a sign of confidence in Sweden’s position within NATO, coming just two years after its accession. “For Sweden to take on this responsibility as the newest member after only two years is clearly a testament to the trust the alliance has in us and the role Sweden plays,” she said.

The foreign minister acknowledged recent tensions among allies but emphasised unity ahead of the Ankara summit. “The tone has, as we know, sometimes been heated between allies, but now 32 allies are gathering to jointly discuss the way forward,” she stated.

The press conference was broadcast live by SVT, with discussions expected to focus on strategic priorities for the alliance in the lead-up to the July summit.
