A dead whale, believed to be a humpback, has been drifting near the Danish island of Anholt, with authorities confirming the animal has been deceased for some time, Danish broadcaster DR reports.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Miljøstyrelsen) stated that the whale has been dead for an unspecified period. The Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) told regional broadcaster TV 2 Østjylland that removal efforts will only begin once the carcass drifts closer to shore.

No further details about the cause of death or the whale’s size have been released.
