Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports that Helsinki’s annual hanami—the traditional Japanese celebration of cherry blossom viewing—filled Roihuvuori’s cherry park with visitors on Ascension Day, despite the trees reaching peak bloom weeks earlier.

The park’s grassy areas were blanketed in pale pink petals, creating a fleeting carpet of blossoms. Warm weather and the holiday encouraged both solo visitors and groups to enjoy the transient beauty of the sakura season.

The event featured Japanese music, performances, and cultural elements, including participants dressed in traditional kimonos and cosplay outfits. Some attendees posed beneath the trees, while others floated koinobori—carp-shaped windsocks symbolising perseverance—above the park’s pond.

Norio Tomida, known as the “father” of Roihuvuori’s cherry park, described the blossoms as a reminder of life’s beauty and impermanence. The festival, though delayed, offered a chance to reflect on the fleeting nature of the season.
