Police in Finland have launched a criminal investigation into suspected misconduct by staff at a residential care unit for people with developmental disabilities in Kajaani, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The case involves allegations of assault, dereliction of duty, and defamation at the Rajamiehentie unit, operated by the Kainuu Wellbeing Services County. Authorities received a report about the suspected misconduct in early May, and charges may be refined as the preliminary investigation progresses.

Last week, police had declined to comment on the ongoing preliminary inquiry. Tiina Kiiltomäki, head of the service area at Kainuu Wellbeing Services County, stated that communication regarding the matter is being handled by police. The wellbeing services county confirmed that relatives of residents had been contacted prior to the public announcement and offered support.

The investigation remains ongoing.
