Norwegians aged 13–15 spend six hours daily on screens, new report shows
Norwegian teens between 13 and 15 years old now spend an average of six hours per day on screens, according to the latest Norwegian Media Barometer 2025, published by Statistics Norway (SSB) and reported by Dagbladet.
Young adults aged 20–24 remain the most active screen users, averaging 7 hours and 19 minutes daily, followed closely by 16–19-year-olds at 7 hours and 6 minutes. Overall, Norwegians spend an average of 5 hours and 21 minutes on screens each day.
The report highlights a sharp rise in social media and digital gaming among children. Daily social media use among 9–12-year-olds jumped from 39% in 2024 to 54% in 2025, while 94% of 13–15-year-olds now use social media daily. On average, 9–12-year-olds spend just over an hour per day on social platforms, compared to three hours for 13–15-year-olds.
YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok are the most popular platforms among younger users. Digital gaming has also surged, with 81% of 9–12-year-olds playing daily—up 12 percentage points from 2024. Similar increases were observed among 13–15-year-olds.
Older Norwegians (67+) still prefer traditional media, spending the most time reading print newspapers, watching linear TV, and listening to radio. However, their use of digital media is gradually increasing.
Fam Vivian Bekkengen, a senior advisor at SSB, noted that the high screen time among youth is linked to social media and gaming habits, while older generations maintain a stronger connection to traditional media formats.
