A 26-year-old woman has been detained on suspicion of killing her boyfriend in Vaasa, western Finland, following an investigation that initially treated the case as a standard death inquiry, reports Yle.

The suspected homicide took place in mid-November at the victim’s apartment in the Palosaari district of Vaasa, according to Mikko Uusimäki, lead investigator and detective chief inspector for Ostrobothnia Police. The suspect did not live at the same address.

Uusimäki confirmed the investigation remains in its early stages, declining to disclose details about the method or weapon used. Some witnesses have yet to be interviewed.

“This was first investigated as a routine death inquiry,” Uusimäki said. “As we examined the case, certain factors emerged—details I cannot disclose—which led us to suspect a crime. Last Friday morning, we detained the suspect.”

The deadline for formally pressing charges is set for 10 September 2024. The Ostrobothnia District Court has remanded the woman in custody on probable cause.
