Faroe Islands imposes emergency trawling ban due to high juvenile fish levels
The Faroese Fisheries Inspection Agency has declared an emergency trawling ban west of Mykines until 3 June after reports of excessive juvenile fish in the area, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The ban, introduced on 6 May, follows an increase in notifications this year about high concentrations of young fish or bycatch exceeding permitted limits in Faroese waters. According to the agency, such emergency measures have been implemented more frequently in both 2025 and 2026 compared to previous years.
Under Faroese maritime regulations, authorities can impose urgent fishing restrictions when juvenile fish or bycatch levels surpass established thresholds in specific zones.
