The first cows of the season were led out to graze at the University of Helsinki’s Viikki research farm on Tuesday, marking the start of summer for the herd, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.

A public event drew spectators as about 65 dairy cows, led by a cow named Talvikki, trotted in line onto fresh grass. Some animals were seen leaping and running in excitement.

The annual tradition has previously attracted thousands of onlookers, according to the university. Last year’s event saw a protester briefly jump into the herd, though the demonstration had been notified in advance. This year’s gathering proceeded without major disruptions.

Viikki research farm, operated by the University of Helsinki, uses the herd for agricultural and veterinary studies.
