Helsinki police suspect financial dispute behind fatal spousal attack in Malminkartano
Helsinki police believe a fatal assault in the city’s Malminkartano district in February was motivated by financial disagreements, public broadcaster Yle reports.
A 70-year-old man is suspected of killing his wife with a sledgehammer in the early hours of 7 February. Police were alerted to the private residence that afternoon. The suspect, who has no prior criminal record, has admitted to the killing.
Detective Chief Inspector Juha Piippo confirmed the couple had argued the previous evening over financial matters. “He has explained the dispute himself in that way,” Piippo said, declining to provide further details as the case has been referred to prosecutors for consideration of charges.
The suspect remains in custody pending a charging decision, which must be made by 20 May 2026. Prosecutors are expected to bring a murder charge.
