The Faroese Whalers’ Association has requested that the Faroe Islands Coast Guard investigate whether additional pods of pilot whales are present in other areas around the islands, following the discovery of a pod in Hvannasund, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The whales were spotted in Hvannasund around ten days ago. The association now suspects that similar pods may be located in other fjords across the Faroe Islands.

In a statement, the Whalers’ Association called on the coast guard to survey coastal areas, particularly outside designated whale-hunting bays. The group emphasised that no measures should be taken that could alter the whales’ behaviour, in accordance with existing regulations on pilot whale hunts.

The initial sighting in Hvannasund was reported to police.
