Finnish R-kioski chain overhauls stores with Japanese-style convenience model and protein snacks
The Finnish convenience store chain R-kioski is launching a major revamp, introducing a new Ärrä store concept inspired by Japanese convenience stores and expanding its food and beverage offerings, including protein-rich pastries, Finnish broadcaster Yle reports.
The first Ärrä store, focused on food and drinks, will open in June at Helsinki’s Sanomatalo building as a pilot. A new café chain is also set for launch later this year, while the company’s official name will change to Reitan Convenience Finland—the same parent group behind Norway’s Narvesen, Sweden’s Pressbyrån, and 7-Eleven stores across Scandinavia.
CEO Niklas Lilius described the transformation as a near-“startup phase” for the 116-year-old brand. “When you get to develop something entirely new, it feels incredible,” he said. The company aims to replicate the success of international convenience chains, where grab-and-go meals and healthier options are in high demand.
Protein pastries, a hit in Sweden last year, will be among the new products. “If you want something tasty—or something healthy—you can come to us,” Lilius said. The Ärrä concept will roll out nationwide from autumn, with additional R-kioski locations planned in high-traffic urban areas.
The overhaul follows last December’s closure of 54 underperforming stores, which Lilius called “difficult but necessary” to refocus on profitable sites. He emphasized collaboration with franchisees, whose well-being he deemed critical: “The chain only profits if our retailers do. We need them to succeed.”
Lilius acknowledged past criticisms, including reports from former franchisees about financial stress and unmet profitability promises. “We’re learning from mistakes to avoid repeating them,” he said, adding that current retailers have shown strong interest in the new direction.
Reitan Convenience Finland operates 268 R-kioski stores in Finland, with plans to expand. Store hours will now vary by location, though pricing adjustments remain undisclosed.
