Finland’s prison population rose by 5.6% in 2023

Finland’s prison population continued to grow last year, according to new figures from the Criminal Sanctions Agency, as reported by Finnish news agency STT.

The average daily number of inmates in Finnish prisons increased by 5.6 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching approximately 3,550—nearly 190 more than in 2022.

The agency also reported a record-high average daily count of foreign prisoners, which rose by 22 percent from the previous year to around 840 inmates.
