May Day celebrations in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto park remain largely peaceful despite fireworks
May Day celebrations in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto park have proceeded mostly without incident, though some fireworks were set off, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports.
According to Yle’s reporter Cecilia Heikel, thousands gathered in the park on Tuesday evening, with the atmosphere described as calm but lively. Music-filled “techno tents” with loud sound systems and smoke machines added to the festive mood as darkness fell.
Police have maintained a visible presence in the area, responding immediately to reports of fireworks. Authorities have warned that further firework use could lead to the park being cleared of revellers.
