Faroese finance committee rejects fuel tax exemption proposal
The Faroese finance committee will not include a government proposal to temporarily exempt gasoline and diesel from value-added tax (VAT) in its revised budget, the committee’s chair confirmed Thursday.
Helgi Abrahamsen, who leads the finance committee, told public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya that the proposal from Finance Minister Aksel V. Johannesen to waive VAT on fuel until July 31 “does not align” with the committee’s budget adjustments. The committee is set to finalise its revisions on Monday.
The original intention behind the tax cut was to ease financial pressure on households, but critics argued it would primarily benefit vehicle owners rather than broader consumer relief.
Abrahamsen emphasised that any budget changes must remain consistent with the committee’s overall fiscal framework.
