A special parliamentary committee in the Faroe Islands has approved changes to remove gendered terms from official job titles for members of parliament and government, state broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The proposal, which replaces the word “maður” (man) with gender-neutral alternatives such as “kvinna og mann” (woman and man) or simply “fólk” (people), was reviewed by the Article 25 Committee—a cross-party group tasked with amending the government structure law. The committee includes Speaker of Parliament Johan Dahl alongside seven other MPs representing all political parties.

The Faroese parliament initially agreed in 2023 to update the legislation to ensure gender-neutral language in all official contexts. The changes must now be formally approved by a parliamentary vote.
