The Faroese prime minister has received a proposal for a new national order of merit, which would honour individuals for outstanding contributions to the Faroe Islands, reports Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Prime Minister Beinir Johannesen was presented with the recommendation on Flag Day by Sólja í Ólavsøvu, chair of the committee tasked with developing the proposal. The new honour, called the tignarberi (Order of Honour), would be awarded to those who have made exceptional achievements for the benefit of the country and its people.

The committee was established in November 2023 following a 2022 parliamentary resolution instructing the government to draft legislation for a Faroese order of merit. Its members include Sólja í Ólavsøvu, Jóan Pauli Joensen, Dan M. Knudsen, and Urd Johannesen, with Durita Lamhauge Jóansdóttir serving as secretary.

The proposal will now undergo political review. The full recommendation is available here.
