The Faroe Islands and Iceland have yet to reach an agreement on fishing rights beyond August, leaving Faroese vessels unable to fish for herring in Icelandic waters, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The current fishing agreement between the two nations expires on 1 August. Iceland’s Foreign Ministry confirmed to Morgunblaðið that the last formal negotiations took place on 17 March, following earlier meetings in Tórshavn on 29 January and 17 February. Further talks planned for April were postponed due to the Faroese general election on 26 March.

Without a renewed deal, Faroese fishermen will lose access to Icelandic waters for species including herring.
