Police and Ilves prepare for playoff game in Tampere amid fan disorder concerns
Police in Tampere are increasing their visibility ahead of Monday evening’s SM-liiga semifinal match between Ilves and Tappara, following recent incidents of fan misconduct, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
Authorities will maintain a heightened presence both inside and outside Tampere Arena before and after the game to prevent disturbances and clashes between supporters. The move comes after two underage Ilves fans, aged 15–18, were suspected of bringing pyrotechnics into the arena during last Saturday’s playoff game, forcing a 10-minute interruption at the start of the match.
Investigators have not yet determined what type of devices were ignited, but potential charges include disorderly conduct, reckless handling, and resisting security personnel. In February, a U18 match between the same teams was also halted due to Ilves fans lighting flares and causing disruptions.
Ilves, the home team for Monday’s game, has adjusted security measures inside the arena, though event manager Lasse Fihl declined to specify details. One change is the relocation of Tappara’s standing section from behind the goal to the upper level, a request made by the visiting fans to allow flag-waving without obstructing other spectators.
Fihl urged supporters to focus on positive cheering and the game itself. “We hope the competition stays on the ice,” he said.
Tappara currently leads the best-of-seven series 3–2 and could advance to the finals with a win. The puck drops at 18:30 local time.
