Sweden’s Liberal Party (L) has effectively dropped its ambition to serve as a centrist liberal anchor in Swedish politics, according to an analysis by SVT’s domestic political commentator Elisabeth Marmorstein.

The party, which needs to attract around 130,000 additional voters to retain its seats in the Riksdag, has so far seen no significant boost in opinion polls despite shifting its stance toward cooperation with the Sweden Democrats (SD). However, the strategic pivot has made the party more internally cohesive—a potential advantage in the upcoming 2026 election campaign.

Marmorstein notes that while trust in Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson has grown among right-leaning voters, this has not yet translated into broader support for the party itself.
