Finland’s most popular baby names for 2025 revealed: Olivia remains top for girls, Eino rises to first for boys
Olivia has retained its position as Finland’s most popular name for newborn girls in 2025, while Eino has overtaken last year’s favourite to become the top choice for boys, according to new data released Friday by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
The agency’s annual ranking of first names, based on nationwide registrations, shows continuity with previous years but also shifts in popularity. For Finnish-speaking families, Olivia remains the dominant girls’ name, while Eino—previously the second-most common—has now surpassed Leo to claim the top spot for boys.
Among Swedish-speaking families in Finland, Edvin holds steady as the most popular boys’ name, while Saga has risen from second place to become the leading choice for girls, replacing last year’s top name, Alva.
The agency notes that many of the most common names are short, two-syllable choices with a “soft” sound. Some, like Eino and Olivia, may also reflect generational trends, appearing in older relatives’ names.
“There are several names in the list that parents might have encountered in their own family, such as grandparents’ names,” said population registrar Laura Mattila in the agency’s statement.
Finnish law permits parents to give their child between one and four first names, provided they conform to established naming conventions and do not cause offence or confusion.
