Police in the Faroe Islands removed 22 vehicle licence plates overnight in the capital Tórshavn and on the island of Eysturoy, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports. Around 200 drivers have lost their plates in recent weeks due to unpaid road and environmental fees.

The Faroese Road Administration has referred 799 cases of outstanding fees to police—an unusually high number. Authorities are targeting drivers who failed to pay the mandatory fees for the first half of 2026. If a vehicle owner cannot present proof of payment, officers are authorised to confiscate the plates.
