Sweden scraps mandatory driving practice course for learner drivers
The Swedish parliament has voted to remove the requirement for learner drivers and their supervisors to complete a mandatory introductory course before practicing for a category B driving licence, SVT Nyheter reports.
The decision, approved on Wednesday, abolishes a rule in place since 2006. Lawmakers concluded the course had “not had the intended effect of improving the planning, structure, and content of driving practice.”
The government argued that the course requirement acted as a barrier to private practice sessions and limited flexibility in training with multiple supervisors. The change takes effect on 1 August this year.
Critics, including driving instructors, have previously warned that removing the course could reduce road safety standards.
