Vivian E. D. Johansen elected new chair of Faroese traffic safety council
The Faroese Traffic Safety Council (Ráðið fyri ferðslutrygd) has elected Vivian E. D. Johansen as its new chair, replacing Jónhild Rasmussen, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Johansen, who has served as vice chair for the past year, takes over following the council’s 50th annual meeting. The session also saw the election of Karl Leonsson and Turið Madsen as new board members, with Marjun Jógvansdóttir and Dánjal Samuelsen named as alternates. Dan Sofus Hofgaard remains a board member but was not up for re-election this year.
The council marked its 50th anniversary in January, with a planned celebration postponed to later in 2026. According to its annual report, two people died in traffic accidents in the Faroe Islands last year—the same number as in 2024 and 2023.
During the meeting, outgoing chair Jónhild Rasmussen and director Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss presented the 2025 annual report, noting that traffic accident figures have remained stable in recent years. They suggested this could indicate that recent safety measures, such as mandatory hands-free phone use while driving, are taking effect.
Representatives from Tórshavn Municipality also discussed pedestrian traffic, with engineer Boði Haraldson and urban planner Barbara Mikkelsen addressing infrastructure improvements.
