Increased military activity confirmed in Faroese waters

Military presence in Faroese waters has grown significantly since 2022, according to a new report by researchers at the University of the Faroe Islands, as reported by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The findings, published in the study Between Washington and Copenhagen: Greenland, the Faroes, and the Future of the Danish Realm by Heini í Skorini and Mekhala Kollslíð, confirm that foreign warships—operating under diplomatic clearance—have conducted increased activity in the region. One nation in particular has maintained a notable presence in recent years.

The report follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, a period during which military movements in the North Atlantic have drawn closer scrutiny.
