Dozens of doctors and nurses charged with mass privacy violation in Oulu
A district court in Oulu will begin hearing an unusual case this week in which 51 health care professionals—including multiple doctors, nurses, and specialist physicians—face charges of illegally accessing a patient’s medical records, Yle reports.
The accused, all employees of the Pohde well-being services county, are suspected of viewing the confidential health data of a colleague who was also a patient within the same health district at the time. Prosecutors allege the access occurred without consent or valid justification.
The charges stem from incidents between spring and summer 2023, according to police. Authorities previously confirmed the breach was uncovered after the patient themselves reported the unauthorized access.
If convicted under Finland’s data protection laws, the defendants could face fines or up to one year in prison. The Pohde well-being services county and police had both publicly acknowledged the case during earlier stages of the investigation.
