A formal proposal to grant the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland full membership in the Nordic Council will be presented at the organisation’s annual meeting in October, Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The initiative follows a preparatory meeting in Oslo last week, where Faroese MPs Johan Dahl and Høgni Hoydal discussed potential reforms to the Nordic Council’s structure. The talks focused on updating the Helsinki Treaty—the council’s founding agreement—and explored how the three territories could achieve equal status with the current member states.

In 2024, the Nordic Council decided to modernise the Helsinki Treaty, leading to the establishment of a committee tasked with drafting specific proposals. The committee’s primary mandate is to assess how the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Åland could become full members. Their recommendations are expected to be finalised in time for the October session.
