The city council of Varkaus has chosen Henri Tanskanen, the current municipal manager of Juuka, as the city’s new manager following a near-unanimous vote, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.

Tanskanen, who has led Juuka since 2021, secured a clear majority in a closed ballot. His appointment was nearly unanimous, though one formal complaint was filed after his selection. Prior to applying for the Varkaus position, Tanskanen was also a candidate for city manager roles in Lieksa and Savonlinna, advancing to interviews in both cases.

He will assume the position on September 1, replacing Joonas Hänninen, who is moving to become city manager of Rovaniemi. Hänninen had served in Varkaus since 2021.

A total of 14 candidates applied for the Varkaus role, with three advancing to the final assessment stage.
