Finnish police have detained a man suspected of stabbing a pedestrian in Oulu last week, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The attack occurred in the Raksila district on Tuesday, April 14, when a cyclist allegedly stabbed a passerby in the upper body from behind without warning. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the assault, delaying his capture.

Authorities announced Friday that the man matching the suspect’s description had been located through police investigations. Prosecutors will seek his detention on suspicion of attempted murder in Oulu District Court.

Investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine a possible motive. Police previously stated that the victim, described as having a foreign background, was not known to the attacker, and there was no indication the crime was racially motivated. The assault came as a complete surprise to the victim.

Yle had earlier reported that the victim was of foreign origin, though police emphasized no evidence suggested a hate crime motive.
