Children suspected in multiple wildfires across Finland
Finnish police suspect children and young people are responsible for several wildfires reported on Monday in different parts of the country, according to a brief report by national broadcaster Yle, citing the Southwest Finland Police Department.
Authorities said the incidents include children playing with matches under power lines. Fires linked to juvenile activity were reported in Laitila, Turku, and Kaarina in the Varsinais-Suomi region. In Kärsämäki, North Ostrobothnia, emergency services confirmed another wildfire caused by children playing with matches.
Police urged parents and guardians to discuss fire safety and responsibility with children, emphasizing the need to consider the consequences of such actions in advance. Dry conditions have heightened wildfire risks across Finland, with some regions imposing restrictions on open flames, including barbecuing.
