Former ice hockey player Jere Karalahti sentenced for serious drug offences
A Helsinki district court has sentenced former professional ice hockey player Jere Karalahti to one year and nine months of suspended imprisonment for aggravated narcotics offences, reports Finnish broadcaster Yle.
The court found Karalahti guilty of unlawfully possessing cocaine and distributing approximately 300 grams of the drug. The offence was classified as aggravated due to the large quantity of a highly dangerous substance involved.
Karalahti was accused of purchasing a batch of cocaine in July 2025 for €13,500—equivalent to €45 per gram. He faced three drug-related charges, including two counts of aggravated narcotics offences and one basic narcotics offence, committed between May and September 2025, primarily in Helsinki.
During the trial, Karalahti admitted to using drugs since the age of 15 and spending hundreds of thousands of euros on substances over 35 years. However, he denied selling or distributing drugs. His defence lawyer, Mikko Ruuttunen, stated that Karalahti was satisfied with the verdict, as it aligned with his admissions and remained suspended.
Prosecutors had alleged that Karalahti distributed significant amounts of cocaine and amphetamine, claims his defence rejected throughout the proceedings. The distribution charge was ultimately dismissed.
Karalahti spent 4.5 months in pre-trial detention during the investigation. His lawyer previously denied any involvement in a criminal organisation.
Part of a wider criminal network
The case is linked to a broader criminal investigation involving 17 individuals charged with drug offences, robbery, money laundering, and minor firearms violations. Two men, aged 36 and 27, were identified as key figures in the network, accused of acquiring, selling, and distributing tens of kilograms of amphetamine and cocaine, with profits amounting to hundreds of thousands of euros.
Among the accused was a 57-year-old man who partially admitted to the charges, while a 35-year-old rapper denied allegations of possessing and distributing nearly 30 kilograms of amphetamine. Police confiscated over 10 kilograms of amphetamine during arrests and interrogations last autumn.
