Homicide suspect arrested after fatal incident at Turku mental health facility
A 34-year-old woman is set to be remanded in custody on suspicion of homicide after a fatal incident at a mental health and addiction rehabilitation unit in Turku, southwest Finland, public broadcaster Yle reports.
The alleged homicide occurred on Saturday in a residential unit operated by Esperi Care on Ruissalontie street. According to police, officers responded to a report of a dispute between two adults at the facility around midday. Upon arrival, they found a person severely injured, who later died despite emergency medical efforts.
The unit, named Ratamo Turku, provides round-the-clock supported housing and lighter residential services for adults undergoing mental health and addiction rehabilitation. Esperi confirmed in a statement that the incident took place in their facility.
“We have been in contact with the Welfare Area of Southwest Finland and are assisting the police investigation in every possible way,” said Kimmo Nurmi, Esperi’s regional director. “Professional support is being offered to all residents and staff at the unit in cooperation with occupational health services and the welfare area.”
Nurmi described the act of violence as “extremely serious and shocking,” extending condolences to the relatives of the deceased. He emphasised that safety remains a top priority: “We continuously work to ensure that daily life in our units is peaceful and secure for everyone.”
The Southwest Finland District Court will consider the woman’s detention on Wednesday. Police have not disclosed further details about the investigation, including whether residents or staff were involved in the incident. Esperi declined to comment on the specifics of the case.
