Faroese health minister Eyðdis Hartmann Niclasen has described the debate over free abortion access as a pivotal moment in her political career, according to a report by Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Niclasen, who now serves as the Faroe Islands’ minister of health, faced significant opposition within her own Union Party over her proposal to introduce free abortion services. Conservative factions in the party strongly resisted her push to bring the measure before parliament.

Despite the internal conflict, Niclasen remained steadfast in her position, though she later acknowledged the controversy had impacted her political standing. She ultimately secured the second-highest number of votes on the Union Party’s electoral list and was recently appointed health minister.

“I am sincerely grateful that I do not have to relive this experience again in my political career,” Niclasen said. “This was a defining political moment for me.”
