Body of man in his 70s found in water near Larvik
A man in his 70s has been found dead in the water beneath a capsized boat off the coast of Larvik, Norwegian police confirmed Monday. The man was a resident of Porsgrunn, and his next of kin have been notified, Dagbladet reports.
Emergency services, including police, a rescue helicopter, and firefighters with divers, were alerted at around 9:45 AM after a cabin neighbour reported seeing a boat floating keel-up. Initial investigations focused on whether anyone had been aboard or if the vessel had broken loose.
At 10:16 AM, divers discovered the body of the man in the water. Jan Tore Gregersen, operations manager for the Southeast Police District, told NRK that the man was frequently out alone in his boat.
“Nothing indicates there were others on board. We are proceeding under the assumption that he was alone,” Gregersen stated, adding that while the incident appears accidental, authorities are exploring multiple hypotheses. The boat will be towed to shore for further examination.
