More cows grazing could affect meat and dairy prices and availability
A proposal to require all cows—not just organic—to graze outdoors during summer could impact consumer prices and product selection, industry group Landbrug & Fødevarer warns.
The suggestion comes from the Organic Association (Økologisk Landsforening), which advocates for expanded outdoor grazing beyond current organic standards. However, Ida Storm, sector director for cattle at Landbrug & Fødevarer, argues the market must adapt to such changes and that consumers should retain the choice to buy cheaper meat and dairy from cows kept indoors.
Currently, only organic-certified cows are guaranteed outdoor access in summer. The proposal would extend this practice to all cattle, potentially altering production costs and supply.
