The Faroe Islands has recorded an increase in births for the second consecutive year, reversing a long-term decline in birth rates, according to figures from the national statistics office Hagstovuni reported by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Maternity wards at the national hospital in Tórshavn have also observed the shift, though economists caution it is too early to confirm a lasting trend. “We cannot say for certain that this marks a real turning point, or that the increase will continue,” said Erla Thorsteinsson, an economist at Hagstovuni.

The uptick follows several years of declining birth rates in the North Atlantic archipelago. Official data now shows two straight years of growth, but experts remain hesitant to declare a definitive reversal.
