A small aircraft crashed into the Kemijoki River near Rovaniemi on Thursday morning, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle. The pilot, the sole occupant, survived without injury after the plane sank through the ice.

The Lapland Rescue Services received an emergency call shortly before 10 a.m. local time. Authorities confirmed the plane had landed on the river near Alakorkalo, skidded along the ice, and then broken through into the water below.

Rescue crews are working to recover the aircraft from the river. The pilot was able to exit the plane and reach safety before it submerged. No other passengers were reported on board.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation. Further updates are expected as recovery operations continue.
