Around 100 farmers are driving tractors into central Helsinki on Thursday in a protest over agricultural policies, energy security, and food supply concerns, according to Finnish public broadcaster Yle. The demonstration, organised by private individuals rather than political groups, is expected to reach Parliament House at around 11:00 local time before moving to Senate Square.

Mikko Salmu, a farmer from Merijärvi and one of the organisers behind the “Tractor March 2026” Facebook group, cited declining food production and rising farm costs as key motivations. “Food will run out. Farms are disappearing, but the situation isn’t improving enough to ensure food remains available in stores and elsewhere,” Salmu told Yle. He pointed to recent meat shortages in supermarkets as a warning sign of future supply issues.

Salmu also highlighted the aging farmer population and the need for younger workers to sustain domestic production. “As Pentti Linkola [Finnish environmentalist] once said, society’s stability ultimately depends on agriculture,” he added.

Helsinki Police confirmed the protest was pre-registered and is not expected to disrupt traffic. Under Finnish law, tractors may operate in urban areas if properly registered. Authorities have not reported any planned road closures.

The protest follows broader concerns over Finland’s agricultural sector, including rising operational costs and a shrinking workforce, which organisers argue threaten long-term food security.
