A record 55 percent of cyclists in Danish cities wore helmets last year, up four percentage points from 2024, according to a new survey by the Danish Council for Safe Traffic (Rådet for Sikker Trafik).

The figure marks the highest level of helmet use since measurements began, despite many riders acknowledging that helmets can ruin hairstyles or look awkward, as one cyclist told public broadcaster DR: “I put it on and avoid looking in the mirror.”

Urban cycling remains a dominant mode of transport in Denmark, with helmet adoption steadily rising in recent years.
