The Norwegian daily Dagbladet has been nominated in two categories at the prestigious Webby Awards, often called the “Oscars of the internet,” for its AI-powered bias detection tool, the publication announced Tuesday.
The tool, named “Biasdetektoren” (Bias Detector), is among five finalists in the categories “Best Responsible AI Implementation” and “Responsible AI.” Over 13,000 entries were submitted across all Webby Awards categories this year.
“The idea came after we published a story that sparked major internal debate and should not have passed our editorial checks,” said Eugene Brandal Laran, head of AI at Dagbladet. The tool analyzes articles to reveal how editorial choices—such as framing, sourcing, and language—shape readers’ perceptions of a story, visualizing potential bias through a “bias compass.”
Laran emphasized that the detector is not designed to judge individual articles but to help journalists recognize how their decisions influence audience understanding. “As with all AI, it’s crucial not to take the results at face value. Common sense is even more important here than with our other tools,” he said, noting that journalism should not be “neutral and emotionless.”
The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, are among the most coveted honors for digital projects worldwide. This year’s nominees include global names like Taylor Swift, CNN, and Reuters. “It’s exciting to be mentioned alongside them and to see our work gain international attention,” Laran added.
Dagbladet was also nominated in 2025 for its investigative project “De døde alene” (“They Died Alone”). Winners of the 2026 awards will be announced on April 21. Public voting is open in the two categories here and here.
The Webby Awards celebrate excellence on the internet, with past winners including media giants, tech innovators, and cultural icons. The competition highlights groundbreaking work in digital media, interactive advertising, and emerging technologies.
