Faroese parliament convenes with oldest member presiding

The Faroese parliament, Løgtingið, will hold its first session on Monday following the 26 March election, with the oldest member presiding over the opening, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Jenis av Rana of the Centre Party, 73, will lead the session as the eldest elected representative. According to parliamentary rules, he will call on five members to review the election ballots and verify voter eligibility, including citizenship, residency, and legal capacity. They will also examine records from the electoral commission and any potential complaints about the vote.

The group must confirm that no elected members have been convicted of crimes carrying sentences of at least four months in prison or preventive detention, unless five years have passed since the sentence was served, pardoned, or released from custody.

After validating the results, the oldest member will ask all representatives to declare, under oath, any potential conflicts of interest in government-appointed roles or bodies under executive oversight. Exemptions apply to directly elected public offices.

The session will conclude with the election of the parliament’s presiding officer and deputy. Proceedings begin at 10:00 local time.
