A passenger train travelling from Bergen to Oslo caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, forcing the evacuation of around 200 passengers at Geilo station, Dagbladet reports.

The blaze, which began with smoke in the carriages, quickly spread to multiple cars, with open flames engulfing at least three rear wagons, according to emergency services. The fire also extended to surrounding vegetation.

“My impression is that the situation is quite chaotic right now,” Erik Smidsrød, duty officer at the South-East 110 emergency centre, told Dagbladet shortly after 5 p.m. “We’re dealing with a passenger train, and several carriages are on fire.”

All passengers were safely evacuated, with no immediate reports of injuries. Emergency responders, including fire and medical services, were dispatched to the scene. Police confirmed that the affected wagons—where around 30 people had been seated—were detached from the rest of the train.

By 5:15 p.m., fire crews had cut power to the train and begun extinguishing the flames. Evacuated passengers were directed to board five buses arranged by authorities.

The train is operated by Vy, Norway’s state-owned railway company.
