A 22-year-old man suspected in a deadly house fire in Savonlinna, Finland, now faces investigation for four counts of murder and aggravated arson, Yle reports. The district court has extended his pretrial detention.

The Eastern Finland District Court ruled on Thursday that the suspect will remain in custody, citing probable cause for four murders and aggravated arson in connection with a fire on December 6, 2025, in Louhe village, Kerimäki. The victims—a young woman and the suspect’s three children—are believed to have died in the intentionally set blaze.

Prosecutors confirmed the charges have been upgraded from manslaughter to murder. The deadline for formally filing charges has been extended to May 28.

Tuomo Lepola, chief detective inspector for the Eastern Finland Police, declined to comment on why the suspected charges changed during the investigation but noted that extensions are typically granted to clarify evidence gathered during pretrial proceedings.

The suspect, who has denied guilt, had requested release from custody. Police have not disclosed further details about the case.
