A 60-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a fatal shooting in Helsinki’s Pikku Huopalahti district last October, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle. The court ruled the killing was committed in self-defence but convicted the defendant on multiple additional charges.

Markku Sakari Raivio, born in 1966, received the sentence from Helsinki District Court for manslaughter in self-defence, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon, and drug offences. A charge of illegal threats was dismissed. The court also ordered Raivio to pay approximately €30,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.

The confiscated pistol, ammunition, and magazine were forfeited to the state. The fatal incident occurred after midnight on 15 October 2025 at Raivio’s home in Pikku Huopalahti. Emergency services were alerted to reports of gunfire at a private residence, where police later discovered the body of a 50-year-old man born in 1974. The ruling is not yet legally binding.

Two suspects were initially detained in connection with the case, as previously reported by Yle in 2025.
