Archaeologists to search for original church site during cemetery expansion in Fuglafjørður
Archaeologists will attempt to locate the remains of Fuglafjørður’s original church as the village’s old cemetery undergoes expansion, Kringvarp Føroya reports.
The cemetery, where grass now grows over many graves, will be extended to accommodate more burials. During the work, the Faroese National Heritage Agency (Tjóðsavnið) will conduct excavations to find traces of the church that once stood on the site before its demolition in 1872.
No previous archaeological investigations have confirmed the church’s exact original location.
