Sweden Democrats to join government if centre-right coalition wins election
The centre-right Moderate Party would include the Sweden Democrats (SD) in a future government if their coalition wins Sweden’s autumn election, party leader Ulf Kristersson announced Tuesday, according to public broadcaster SVT Nyheter.
Kristersson, the coalition’s candidate for prime minister, confirmed that SD would hold “significant policy influence” and key ministerial posts, particularly in migration and integration, if the so-called Tidö parties—Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats, and Liberals—secure a majority.
“We have agreed to hit the ground running next term and form a strong majority government if voters place their trust in us,” Kristersson said at a joint press conference with SD leader Jimmie Åkesson.
Åkesson declined to speculate on specific cabinet roles but stated that SD expects influence “proportional to the party’s size.” He added that the party’s priority lies in policy impact rather than titles.
“Those of us outside government have noted that issues important to us aren’t always present in every room and every context,” Åkesson said.
The announcement follows repeated statements from SD that it would either join a future government or remain in opposition after the election.
