A Danish man convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy continued to stalk and harass his victim after serving a nine-month prison sentence, DR reports. The offender, now sentenced for additional crimes against other minors, could be released again this summer.

The victim, identified only as Christian, was 11 when he was assaulted in 2019 by a neighbor in his hometown in western Zealand. The offender—a former aircraft mechanic in his late 50s—groomed Christian by bonding over shared mechanical interests, buying him an ATV, and inviting him to work in his workshop. The abuse occurred there on April 8, 2019.

Despite the offender’s warning to keep it secret, Christian told his mother. The man was convicted that year and sentenced to nine months in prison, along with a restraining order barring contact with Christian and another local boy, “Gustav,” whom the offender had also targeted.

After his release, the man violated the order repeatedly. He pursued Christian by bicycle, appeared at his family’s summerhouse, and attempted to give him gifts, including candy, seashells, and money. He also contacted Gustav in efforts to reach Christian.

In November 2025, six years after the first conviction, the offender was sentenced again—this time to two years in prison for stalking Christian and for serious sexual offenses against three other boys, aged 8, 14, and 16, whom he groomed online.

Now 18, Christian has spent years in therapy and rebuilding his life. He criticizes Denmark’s justice system for what he calls absurdly lenient sentences for sexual crimes against children, contrasting them with harsher penalties for drug offenses.

“I’d tell the justice minister: you have to change the rules in a constructive way,” Christian said. He has reached out to legal policymakers to share his story.

Acting Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard (Social Democrats) called child sexual abuse “horrific” and said he is open to reform. “I’m willing to discuss anything that helps us go after these offenders,” he told DR in an interview conducted before the recent parliamentary election was called. He added that offender rehabilitation must also be part of the solution.

The offender is eligible for release this summer.
