Finnish police have completed a preliminary investigation into a suspected homicide in Ilomantsi, eastern Finland, after discovering the remains of a missing man, public broadcaster Yle reports.

A 61-year-old local man is suspected of killing a 63-year-old acquaintance from Häme in October 2025 at a leisure property in Ilomantsi. The suspect has admitted during questioning to causing the victim’s death and attempting to conceal the crime. Investigators believe the victim died from external violence and that the suspect tried to dispose of the body.

The case came to light when the victim, who had travelled to Ilomantsi, failed to return home as planned. A relative filed a missing person report, prompting the investigation. In November, police detained the local suspect, who was remanded in custody by North Karelia District Court on suspicion of murder.

Authorities conducted searches in Ilomantsi between October and December, locating the victim’s remains. The suspect remains in pre-trial detention while prosecutors review the case for possible charges.
